Why Granite?

Why Genuine Stone?
Granite offers beauty, easy care and durability. Granite is often found in upscale and sophisticated residences, palaces and hotels throughout the world due to its texture and luster. Natural stone provides the look and feel of elegance through a quality and strength that will never be reached by other materials.

Next to diamonds, granite is the strongest stone in the world. In fact, diamonds are used to cut granite. So, like diamonds, granite is forever!

In natural hard surfaces like granite, a certain amount of "movement" or grain is usually expected. Many people find this flow and blending of colors to be the most compelling reason for using genuine stone.

What is Granite?
Granite is an igneous rock created deep within the earth from magma, cooled slowly under great pressure. It is the hardest stone after the diamond, with very dense grain, making it virtually impervious to stain. It takes a highly polished finish, which will endure even in inclement environments. There is a broad spectrum of granite colors ranging from nearly pure white to nearly pure black. During its formation, granite may also have been infused with other minerals providing patterned movement as well as color.

Why granite? Should I consider corian or silestone instead?
No. Corian and silestones are imitations of granite. Granite is a natural stone, while corian and silestones are man-made. Some silestone and corian salespeople discourage customers from getting granite claiming that the granite needs to be sealed frequently. This is untrue! Good quality granite does not need to be sealed more than once every three to five years and it takes less than ten minutes to reseal an average size kitchen. Moreover, most expensive houses have granite not silestone or corian.

What is the optimum thickness for granite countertops?
An optimal thickness for kitchen granite countertops
is 3 cm, or 1 ¼”.  For a thicker appearance, an edge treatment, such as half bullnose edging is recommended. This creates the illusion of even thicker granite without adding additional stress on your cabinets.

What is the best edging and why?
The best edge treatment, which is also the most widely used, is
½ Bull Nose edging. In addition to having an aesthetic appeal, this edging is the safest around young children and is unlikely to chip.

Is the edging done by machines?
Adobe Walls Stoneworks utilizes both machine edges and hand carved edges.   All edging is performed by highly trained professionals under the supervision of the Adobe Walls Stoneworks staff.

How often do I need to seal granite?
Good quality granite does not need to be sealed more than once every three to five years.
